Chapter 41 : All is weird that ends well
_______________________________________________

There was a robot and one single Universe left.

There was a man from Earth and a woman from Earth.

There was Zaphod and there was Ford.

There was Slartibartfast and a fjord.

The robot looked at the sky and said: ''He was right.''.

''Who was, Marvin?'', Trillian asked, as Arthur was lying on the grass before his house, a cup of steaming tea next to him.

''The Keeper of the After-sale Service of the soul. He was right. This is... good. What he said was the best thing that could be said.'', the robot concluded.

Please prepare for a flashback in the next chapter.

Chapter 42 : The Keeper's message to his creator

Final Chapter : The Keeper's message to his creator.

''I am here to complete a work which has been going on for billions of years.", the Keeper of the After-Sale Service of the Soul said to Marvin. "I have spent my life, the life you gave me, trying to set things right, creating a multitude of parallel universes, making tiny little changes. Changes with power, the power to change the biggest of all stories. History. And there is something we learned from this little experiment of yours, Marvin''.

''Yes. Things always turn for the worst.''

''No.''. And there the man had a mischivious smile. ''Things'', he said. ''always turn for the weirdest.''.

''It took me seven billion years to figure this out. There is no such thing as a perfect Universe, for there is no such thing as an imperfect Universe. The answer is right there. When you made me, Marvin, you gave me the name of Deep Thoughts, because I had been designed to achieve results thanks to wonderful powers of reflection. But it was not a mathematical problem, it couldn't be solved by usual computer thinking. You needed a whole different kind of thinking, a very simple one to figure out that the only solution was to admit that there was in fact nothing fundamentally wrong with the Universe, and thus that there was no problem at all.''

''Look at this.'', the Keeper said.

Marvin lowered his gaze. It fell on two words written on a computer screen, punctuated by an exclamation mark.

The letters are friendly, Marvin thought. And then he realised that it was in fact not the letters that were friendly.

No. The words were friendly.

''Don't panic!''.

Don't panic. Nothing makes sense, but nothing can go wrong. Don't panic. If there is no problem, there is no solution worth seeking. If it's not broken, don't fix it.

Marvin raised his gaze.

And, with drops of water at the corner of his eyes, he said:

''You have fixed it. Finally.''.

He could feel no more pain in his diodes.

He could feel no more pain at all.

And the light in his eyes became brighter for the very first time.

Now, he only had to choose a Universe and destroy the rest. Because this Universe could only be the right one. Because there was no wrong Universe.

Chapter 43 : The Answer to Life
__________________________________________________

When everything was over and the Universes destroyed until only one was standing, the robot decided that he needed rest.

But then, the Keeper appeared to him for one last time and said:

''Now, I owe you the truth. You already know it, deep inside of you.''.

He paused.

''I know.'', the robot said. ''You are not real. There is no Deep Thoughts, only -''.

''Only your own deep thoughts. You are no creator of Universes. You are a simple robot.'', the Keeper continued. ''And I am merely your subconscious and your conscious. I am your brain sending you a signal. My mission isn't to set the Universe right. My only mission is to set you right. Because it is your last chance.''.

''Because I am dying.'', the robot said.

''Yes.''.

''Thank you. It worked. I think. I think I-''.

The Universe disappeared around him, only to appear again in the form of a desert.

As Marvin's eyes laid once again on the last letter of God's Final Message to His Creation, he whispered: ''I think... I feel good about it.''.

The lights went out in his eyes for absolutely the very last time ever.
